Chocolate Wonders

Everyone loves M&Ms! Did you ever wonder who invented them? Forrest E. Mars did just that! He was born on March 3, 1904 in Minnesota. He was raised in Canada after his parents got divorced. Mars attended Yale University where he received a degree in industrial engineering. .

He started working with his father in his candy business. Mars wanted to do more things so he left his father’s business. He moved to England to sell the Mars candy bars. There, Mars started a small candy factory. In 1940, Forrest E. Mars moved back to the United States of America. .

While Mars was traveling he saw Spanish soldiers eating small chocolate pellets. Later in the 1940s he made his own version of them. Mars made a deal with Hershey via Murrie. Murrie worked for Hershey Corporation. They decided to split the responsibilities. Mars and Murrie named their new product after their last initials: M&M.

It is really cool that the soldiers in World War II ate M&Ms. Can you believe that our heroes ate our favorite candy? Well, next time you eat a pack of M&Ms thank Forrest E. Mars!

Nature Lovers Here is a Place for You!

Richard Hollingshead, a sales manager from Camden, NJ invented drive-in movie theaters in 1928. His large mother was not comfortable in regular movie theater seats. He invented the drive-in to help his mother and let people enjoy a movie in the car. He did it by building a giant wall and putting a projector in the hood of his car. Then he put a radio in the back of his wall. There are still drive-ins today. The cost of the drive-in was 25 cents per person, now the cost is 25 dollars per person. The largest drive-in is still in Copiague, New York. Have you ever been to a drive-in?
