A Man and the Submarine
Who’s the man who invented the submarine? His name is John Philip Holland. He was born in 1841 in Liscannor, Ireland and died in 1914 in Totowa, New Jersey. After his father died, his family moved to Limerick in 1853. Holland joined the Christian Brothers where he was interested in scientific experiments. He was very interested in sea travel and flying. He had a science teacher who encouraged him with his dreams of building a submarine.
In 1873, Holland moved to the U.S.A. to be with his family. Even though he took a teaching job at St. John’s Catholic School in Paterson, New Jersey, he never gave up his dream of building a submarine. After the U.S. turned down his design, Holland joined with the Fenian Movement and decided to use the submarine against the British Navy. The sub would sneak close to a British war-ship and attack.
Their first submarine was planned and built in Paterson, New Jersey. In 1877, it was launched down the Passaic River. It was not successful. Improvements were made and the next day Holland found success.
Over the years, Holland refined his design and sold the submarines to the U.S.A., Japan, and England.

What’s the Spin on Electricity?
Have you ever wondered how to reduce pollution and find a sustainable energy source all at the same time? Well, the people at Atlantic County Utilities Authorities have found a solution.
In 2005, they topped the windmills stem with a football field sized rotor wheel. This was the first of five windmills. Once all these windmills are up they’ll give of a lot of electricity. This electricity will be enough for one million two hundred fifty homes. This energy savings is equivalent to about 20 million trees or not driving more than 19 million miles. The company is also using solar panels, making their diesel truck fleet into a more fuel efficient bio diesel. They are also using 10 billion watts of wind generated electricity.
Their motivation for starting this company is wanting to save electricity and making electricity naturally out of wind. People think windmills are ugly. I think they’re beautiful in two ways. One in that they are just beautiful spinning. Two is that they make beautiful fuel out of something natural and that is wind. This is a very good idea.
