Highlands Region of New Jersey

Do you want to have some fun? The Highlands Region is an area of over 1,250 square miles. It covers parts of 7 counties and 88 municipalities. The New Jersey Highlands are also called the New England Upland. It is similar in geography to New England. The Highlands are a series of flat-topped ridges made of gneiss, a banded rock created by heat and pressure. The region has many lakes. Some of the many of the lakes are Lake Hopatcong, Green Lake, Green Pond, and Culvers Lake. Visitors to the Highlands can find many miles of hiking trails as well as opportunities to swim, boat, crab, fish, canoe, windsurf, photograph, bird watch, hunt, downhill or cross-country ski, bike, golf, and picnic. Morris County is in the Highlands Region. Morris County is 30 miles northwest of New York City. It has rolling hills, broad valleys and glittering lakes. You can visit Morris Museum in Morristown. There you will find Arts, Sciences, Humanities, and Contemporary Sculpture. In the Highlands in the winter they have premier ski and snowboard resorts with four mountain peaks. The region contains nearly 860,000 acres of forested ridges, abundant wildlife and historic treasures. Over half of the area in New Jersey Highlands is all forested land. So are you going yet?

The Old Barracks – Then and Now

The Old Barracks Museum in Trenton, New Jersey was built in 1758 by the British during the French and Indian War. It was used as a winter quarters for British soldiers. The Barracks were also used as an army hospital for the Continental Army from 1777 to 1781. When the Revolutionary War was over the Barracks were sold. In 1902 patriotic women bought the south wing and opened up the first Old Barracks Museum. In 1917 New Jersey bought the building and opened the whole building up as the Old Barracks Museum. The Old Barracks Museum is located next door to the State House. At the Old Barracks Museum there are many things to do. You can walk in or do group tours, Camp-ins, Summer Day Camp, Outreach Programs, Rentals, and celebrate George Washington’s birthday. If you go to a Camp-in you can eat a pot of stew, tour the museum, eat a continental breakfast and much more. At the Summer Day Camp you can cook in the 18th century manner, make your own 18th century clothing, sing and dance to 18th century music, and other things. On Washington’s birthday, the general comes to the Barracks hospital and shares his cake. The Old Barracks is a great place to learn about New Jersey’s place in the American Revolution.

Paramount Theater

The Paramount theatre is located in Asbury Park. It is important because the Paramount theatre was designed by the famous architecture firm of Warren and Wetmore, who also designed Grand Central Station in NY. It was opened in July 11, 1930.

Some interesting facts about the Paramount theatre are that it is located with Asbury Park’s Convention Hall. The first show was with the Marx Brothers and Ginger Rogers. Since then, many famous stars played there. Bruce Springsteen got the start of his career at The Stone Pony. Others are: Frank Sinatra, Elton John, The Supremes, Paul Anka, Rolling Stones Temptations, Glen Miller, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, The Platters, Bon Jovi and more famous people have been hosted in the theatre.

The Paramount is one of the majesties along the NJ oceanfront. It is on the boardwalk by the ocean. It has a large stage area and arena floor. The arena has 1,600 seats. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Paramount Theater is an important historical landmark in New Jersey. It has shows for all ages. Maybe you can visit it someday.
