Judy Blume
We all know Judy Blume is the author of twenty-two award-winning books. But did you know some of her books were banned for being too realistic?
Judith Blume was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on February 12, 1938. Her name was Judy Sussman then! Her parents were Rudolph and Esther. When Blume was a child, she loved to write. Sussman married Peter Blume and became Judy Blume. She had three children: Randy Lee, Lawrence, and Andrew. Before Blume started publishing her books for the public, she wrote stories for her own children.
Most of her published books, especially Starring Sally J. Freedman, are related to her life. Blume’s books were soon banned for talking about things most parents don’t want talked about. For example, she discussed menstruation, puberty, and religion. They were allowed again, but some parents didn’t let their children read them.
Blume’s books have won a vast amount of awards. They’ve been translated into thirty-one languages. Blume organized the Kids Fund. It collects and donates money for poor children’s education.
Blume later divorced Peter Blume and married George Cooper. They currently live on an island along New Jersey’s East Coast. Judy Blume is sixty years old.

The Red Mill
The Red Mill was built in 1810. The mill is 1,097 years old. It’s on 10 acres by the Raritan River. The mill is located in Clinton, NJ. They have 40,000 artifacts. The mill was also featured in a movie. The mill is open April through mid October and closed on holidays and also closed on Mondays. They host many events.
During the Halloween holiday, they decorate the mill and people dress up. They do haunted hay rides. In the summer there’s a concert series. There are car shows and children’s programs.
It’s a popular place to rent. People rent it so they can have a nice wedding by the river.
The gift shop is next to the Admissions Desk. The kids love the corn husk dolls in the gift shop. The adults like the serving bowls in the shop.
They have all kinds of programs at the mill. Kids from preschool through 8th grade go to different programs. There are group tours. I went to the schoolhouse and the mill in 3rd grade. The schoolhouse teacher taught us something new and we played games.
I would like to go back and visit there again someday soon..
